Born in Chiclayo in 1928, Federico Kauffman earned a doctorate in Archaeology in 1955 and a doctorate in History from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in 1961. He has five Peruvian and foreign Honoris Causa doctorates. He has been director of the National Cultural Heritage; director of the National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru; founding director of the Lima Art Museum (MALI, 1961), and scientist member of the Giancarlo Ligabue Foundation (Venice, Italy). Specialized in the scientific investigation of the Chachapoyas culture, he has also conducted archaeological and ethnographic investigations at Chavín, Arequipa, Huánuco, Ayacucho and Cuzco. He has earned several decorations in Peru and abroad, including the Peruvian National Prize for Culture (twice, in 1955 and 1962) and the Amauta degree (the highest Peruvian decoration in the cultural and professorship field), as well as several other decorations, including from Austria, Belgium and Sweden. He is author of more than 300 publications, including articles, brochures and a total of fifty books.
